Montenegro vs. England has not long kicked off in what is widely accepted as the Group G decider, Theo Walcott has delivered a rare quality ball into the 6yd box for Young to convert, and ironically I find myself writing the first offering from iFootballTIPS without several bets to keep an enthusiastic eye on...
In recent years I have been minded to avoid the lure of betting on international football, particularly at this late stage in the campaign when many teams have little to play for. Betting on internationals generally does not sit easy with me and I’m not one to risk any of the betting bank when I’m not confident.
I don’t like the idea of backing the form of teams that play a handful of games per year and are made up of players who only get together on the pitch for a few days before each match.
Pundits always refer to the ‘step up to international football’ but is it really a step up for experienced champions league players to go up against players that in many cases would struggle to break into the side of a team playing in the equivalent of the English Championship? It shouldn’t be, but often performances suggest international football is indeed a ‘step up’. I haven’t carried out any analysis to test it, but I believe the gap between the best and lesser nations has narrowed over the last decade – perhaps the irregularity of matches is to some degree a leveller. Despite this I have not seen too many value bets amongst the more favoured teams – I suspect the number of household names within a nation’s squad, rather than the ability to play as a team, has a stronger pull on the price. With that in mind, it is no surprise that Spain are the team to beat when such a large proportion of their starting XI play with each other day in day out.To answer the question in the title... tread carefully, international football introduces considerations that won’t normally be considered in your regular weekly betting activity. Carry out a more detailed screening of your selections and be confident you are getting value.
